The momentum on climate change is building every day--it feels GREAT to be part of that movement. Here are a few of the many activities you can get involved in.
First of all, thank you to everyone who came out to hear George Marshall last night. He gave us lots of food for thought on why people avoid thinking about climate change and how we can better communicate that topic. Read his excellent book, Don't Even Think About It: Why Our Brains Are Wired to Avoid Climate Change.
We're Upping the Game on climate change with the Action Plan from the Town Hall in May. The final plan will be out in a few weeks and then the fun begins. We'd like to introduce Chris Brown, who will work with organizations and individuals to implement the action items in the Plan. Let Chris know which areas you want to work on. We will also bring the Action Plan to local decisionmakers, including the City Council, SACOG board, and others. This is an exciting effort--introduce yourself to Chris (firstname.lastname@example.org) and get involved.
The People's Climate March is Sunday, Sept 21. Plan to do something for the climate that day (get out in the streets if you can). There are many options:
• SACRAMENTO: Avaaz.org has organized a Sacramento event on Sept 21 at 1 pm at 1010 L St (the Capitol). https://secure.avaaz.org/en/event/climate/Peoples_Climate_March_1168
• DAVIS: People's Climate Action Day in Davis will be from 11:30 - 2:30 in Central Park at the Farmer's Market Pavilion. http://www.cooldavis.org/2014/09/12/peoples-climate-action-day-in-central-park/#more-4138
• OAKLAND: The main Northern California Event is the Oakland Rally from 2–5 pm at the Lake
Merritt Amphitheater (close to the Lake Merritt BART station.) http://bayareasept21-350bayarea.nationbuilder.com/
• NEW YORK--several people from Sacramento are going to the mother march in NYC. If you are one of them, contact Martha Turner, email@example.com, to possibly get together in NY. http://peoplesclimate.org/march/
The People's Climate Train is traveling from the Bay Area to New York City, picking up people for the march all along the way. It's a 4-day party/organizing ride. The Climate Train will come through Sacramento at 11:09 am (scheduled time) on Sept 15, and a second one on Sept 16. Come out to the Amtrak station to cheer them on their way--bring signs. http://peoplesclimatetrain.weebly.com/
Your comment letter on the Valero Crude by Rail DEIR must be postmarked Monday, Sept 15. A template or, even easier, a postcard are available at http://www.350sacramento.org/oil-trains.html.
SacEV is sponsoring a Ride and Drive event for National Drive Electric Week on Sunday, Sept 14 in Folsom. Come out and test drive a variety of EVs. http://www.saceva.org/#!national-drive-electric-week-2014/c9fh
