Oil Train Workshop—Learn how to respond to the Valero Crude-by-Rail proposal
Tuesday, August 19 at 7 pm
Breathe CA conference room, 909 12th St, Ste. 100, Sacramento
The Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) on the Valero proposal that would run 100 oil cars a day in each direction through Sacramento is out for public comment, due Sept 15. This is a massive document with fatal flaws, such as its conclusion that this project doesn't pose a significant hazard to the public and environment. Your comments matter! Come to this workshop for background, brainstorming, and help in writing your letter. Refreshments too. We encourage organizations, neighborhood groups, schools, and others to come learn how to write your letter.
Come to the SACOG meeting to support their DEIR comments
Thursday, August 21 (the SACOG meeting starts at 9:30, this action item is #12, so it will probably come up in the afternoon. Watch our tweets for more information at 350Sacramento)
1415 L St, Ste 300, Sacramento
Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG) will vote on final approval of a DEIR comment letter drafted by their Rail Ad Hoc Committee (attached below--it's worth reading). The letter is a very good, thoughtful analysis and raises many important issues for uprail communities like Sacramento. If approved, the letter will be sent to Benicia and its concerns must be addressed in the EIR.
Valero and Union Pacific representatives are trying to persuade SACOG that this letter is unnecessary. It is important that we show up to urge SACOG to stand firm and submit the letter as written. This letter is crucial in the effort to stop the increase in oil trains in our community.
